The Icelandic Ostomy Association.

The Icelandic Ostomy Association was founded in 1980 and has approximately 260 members (2007). Our members are mainly concentrated in the capital area but there is also a branch in the Northern part of the country. Isilco is governed by a board of five members each elected for a period of two years.

ISILCO is a member of the Cancer Union of Iceland and also the Disabled Persons Union.

In Iceland all appliances are free of charge. All supplies ostomates need are paid by the National Health Insurance which is funded by taxes.

Mission statement

The Icelandic Ostomy Association set objectives to promote a physical, mental and social condition, favourable as possible of people with a stoma or pouch and people who have had a stoma.

Objectives:

• Support its members and their interests.
• Acts as promoter at The National Health Insurance and government institutions.
• Provide information on living with a stoma or pouch and concerning relevant developments in that area.
• Is for its work dependent on the Cancer Union and Disabled Persons Union of Iceland, contributions from its members and donations.
• Is administratively independent.
